New English Course Developed for ESL Students

Starting Winter Quarter 2015, Clover Park Technical College will introduce a new English course for second language students.

English 092 was developed to support ESL students in CPTC’s professional-technical programs with speaking and listening support. The five-credit course is for students who are fine with written and hands-on work, but have difficulty communicating.

ESL Instructor Heather Stevens will teach the course. Students will practice many levels of conversation in English to improve their speaking, idioms, pronunciation and clarity.

The class qualifies for financial aid if the student is enrolled in a professional-technical program. The prerequisites for the class are an instructor recommendation and English 094 Advanced Reading and Writing.

ESL is a program for adults who do not speak English as their first language. The program focuses on the four language competencies: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Class sizes are small and computer-assisted learning is included.
